Timber Seed Zones

Although we typically only have one or two seed zones for some native species, Douglas fir and Noble Fir come in a wide variety. Some make better Christmas trees than others, but the main use of the seed zone is to replant trees that came from the same or nearby area. They are accustomed to the elevation and growing conditions in the area they came from. Here are some maps of Oregon and Washington. The more specific zones use 3 digit codes for smaller areas. In 1996 the Oregon Department of Forestry combined zones into larger vertical bands that they determined would be suitable for replanting. This makes it a bit easier to get trees to replant. We use the old codes because they are more specific, but the new zones offer larger areas to be able to choose from.
